In 1922, Charles-Edouard Jeanneret, better known as 'Le Corbusier', and his cousin Pierre Jeanneret founded an architectural firm that was joined by Charlotte Perriand in 1927. The three designers introduced the armchair 'Grand Comfort' in 1929 as part of an interior created for the »Salon dÙAutomne« in Paris. The most prominent constructive feature of this armchair is the clear distinction between the load-bearing frame and supported elements. In concurrence with its programmatic name 'Grand Comfort', the armchair's chrome-plated tubular steel frame and the five voluminous, orthogonal leather cushions evoke both comfort and formal reduction.
